newborn sessions
I do all of my newborn sessions in my Evanston home studio. It's warm, quiet and peaceful. The lighting is always perfect, and you don't need to clean your house!
When to book your session
I recommend booking your newborn session in your second trimester to make sure I have availability around your due date. Studio newborn sessions are ideally done within the first 10 days. During this period babies sleep very deeply and can be molded into all those cute, curled up poses without waking. (I do lots of shoots with older newborns, so if your baby is already over 10 days please reach out to check my availability.)
What to expect
Full newborn sessions take 2-3 hours. Mini sessions take one hour. I recommend feeding the baby just before your session to help get him nice and sleepy.
I keep the studio very warm for newborn sessions to help baby sleep. Dress in layers so you aren't too hot.
Keep in mind that half of your session may be spent feeding, soothing and changing the baby. It takes a fraction of a second to take a picture. Most of the time is spent getting baby ready for the picture!
What to bring
- Plenty of diapers. wipes, pacifiers and formula (if you aren't breastfeeding). Bring more than you think you'd ever need!
- Water and a snack for yourself
- A book, magazine or tablet
What to wear
For parents, I recommend wearing light, neutral colors on top such as white, ivory, cream, beige and gray. Light blue looks great too. Avoid red because it brings out the red in the baby's skin. Adding a little texture, such as lace, embroidery or a sweater knit looks great. Avoid large patterns, which can be distracting.
Don't worry about bringing clothes for the baby. Newborns tend to get swallowed up by clothes because they're so tiny. I have swaddle wraps and diaper covers in the studio.
A peaceful environment
Ideally baby will be asleep for a good part of the session. A calm, quiet environment can help with this. Put your cell phones on quiet mode. If possible, I recommend having siblings present only for the family photos at the start of the session.
Natural posing
I want your baby to be comfortable and safe during the session. I use poses that disrupt the baby's sleep as little as possible, and if a baby doesn't like a particular pose I won't force it.
